Lourdes University

Founded in 1958 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Lourdes University is nestled in the charming suburban city of Sylvania, Ohio, just minutes from Toledo and part of the famed Great Lakes region. Rooted in Catholic and Franciscan values, Lourdes students experience the true essence of a personalized liberal arts education with a professional studies focus.

This unique curriculum attracts a diverse community of learners who seek to better themselves through thought-provoking conversations and hands-on practical experiences. Lourdes faculty and students together explore not just the questions of the mind but also those of the spirit. Lourdes graduates are professionals committed to the common good, well-educated and able to engage individuals from many cultural settings and backgrounds.

Lourdes University’s academic and student support programs have been recognized for their excellence. Princeton Review has named Lourdes University among its Best Midwest Colleges for the past 10 years, GI Jobs Magazine named it a Military Friendly School for the past five years and The Chronicle of Higher Education has named it twice as one of the Great Colleges to Work For®. Additionally, the university has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for two consecutive years.
Committed to its Franciscan values of community, learning, reverence and service,

Lourdes students must complete a minimum of 20 service learning hours as part of their curriculum before receiving their bachelor’s degree. This commitment to service not only benefits the students but also the communities in which they serve before and after graduation.

A variety of social, recreational, athletic and educational activities enrich the college experience. Lourdes is also proud of its vibrant and strong campus ministry programming that includes:

  • Soup & Scripture weekly gatherings
  •  Mass and fellowship
  • Retreats
  • Educational walking tours about St. Francis of Assisi
  • Prayer opportunities
  • Franciscan pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome, Italy
  • Habitat for Humanity spring break trips

Lourdes graduates are role models of integrity and leaders in their communities. They heal those who need medical care, educate those who seek knowledge, and lead in the business, government, and non-profit sectors. Lourdes University alumni are a positive force in our region and throughout the world, infused with the values of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi.
Lourdes’ mascot also exemplifies the institution’s proud Catholic and Franciscan heritage. “Gubi” as he is affectionately known is named after the well-known story of St. Francis, the wolf and the town of Gubbio, Italy.
